Hałasa M, Maciejewska D, Baśkiewicz-Hałasa M, Machaliński B, Safranow K, Stachowska E. Oral Supplementation with Bovine Colostrum Decreases Intestinal Permeability and Stool Concentrations of Zonulin in Athletes. Nutrients. 2017 Apr 8;9(4). pii: E370.

• Double-blind placebo-controlled study (n=16) compared 20 days supplementation with either 500 mg of bovine colostrum (BC) or placebo (whey protein) during peak athletic training.
• Gut permeability status was measured by differential absorption of lactulose and mannitol (L/M urine test) and stool zonulin concentration.
• BC supplementation decreased and mostly restored to normal the two indicators of intestinal permeability.

CONCLUSION: Bovine colostrum supplementation is safe and effective for decreasing intestinal permeability in athletes who are at increased risk of developing intestinal permeability. BC may have a preventative role in healthy people by restoring gut status following either antibiotic or NSAID use.
